Message From the Chair

With the approaching Thanksgiving holiday, it’s a perfect time to reflect on all of the things for which we are thankful. Wonderful family and friends, and good health are at the top of my list.

I am grateful to serve as the 2016 chair of the PRSA Health Academy. We are 850 members strong. I am truly thankful for all the work of our Executive Committee members this year. They are a very talented, thoughtful, dedicated and creative group of PR/communications professionals from across the country, and it has been a joy collaborating with them on many initiatives.

Beginning in 2017, Brendon Shank will chair the Health Academy, and we will have one open seat on the Executive Committee. I would invite you, if you are interested, to submit a nomination by the deadline, Nov. 22. The details are included below in this newsletter.

I also am thankful to have had the opportunity to attend the PRSA International Conference last month in Indianapolis. A highlight was the dinner that we hosted for 22 Health Academy members and others who were interested in finding out more about our Section. We talked about the benefits of Health Academy membership, and the many opportunities to get involved in our activities throughout the year including planning the annual conference, writing for our newsletter and social media outlets, developing webinar and teleseminar programs, generating sponsorships and assisting with membership activities.

Our annual Health Academy conference next year will be held April 26-28, 2017, at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., located just outside Orlando. The theme is “Transformation, Magic & Opportunity in the New Kingdom of Health Care Communications.” I look forward to seeing you there! If you would like to help with the Health Academy conference, please contact our conference chair, Lisa Arledge Powell.

I hope that you enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday and the rest of 2016, and that all of your wishes and goals will come true in the year ahead.

Making the Most of Your Experts

by Jennifer E. Smith, APR

By now, you’re likely well versed in and practicing content marketing. The advantage of moving from traditional communications to a content brand becomes more evident as media channels diminish and businesses are forced to become more self-reliant for exposure.
